The book itself was quite short, which no doubt added to the feeling of "rapid escalation" that may well excusable as a trope of the genre someone more experience than I would have to weigh in there. It wasn't an amazing story it took some time to get used to the somewhat lowered stakes compared to books I usually read, it occasionally tended to the histrionic - particularly the protagonist's over-the-top reactions in some cases, and one in particular. Robb books and figured if there were any romance author I was likely to enjoy, it would be her. I chose Nora Roberts as i'm already a big fan of the J.D. It's the first true "romance" novel i've ever read as I felt it's important to expand my horizons occasionally. I was actually quite surprised to enjoy this book. Our hero is a troubled magician, our heroine is a realist. Especially not with a guy who is emotionally abusive. She has kept up with the times and her books now show much stronger heroines who don't fall insta love. Romances now are different and have evolved with the times. He comes on strong, she resists at first then melts into his arms. Our hookups often involved bruised lips and 'just short of rape' encounters. Our romance stories were a bit more alpha male, sometimes quite over the top. Okay, I want you to remember that the 1980's were a different time. Also enjoyed the tender tidbits between Link and Bess, and just every scene in this book- be it their passionate lovemaking, small gestures of care, the angst when they battle, the birthday celebration, or how they changed each other for the better. ![]() ![]() They both had their own battles to deal with, but coming together they definitely proved that love was not an illusion, but a pure magical feeling between soulmates. There is just so much affection and purity in their relationship- I enjoyed every moment they spent together, falling more and more in love.
